The coenzyme Q10 (coQ10) is the essential fuel for mitochondria which are the energy powerhouses of our cells. It has long been used in natural medicine, particularly to support the heart function since the cells of the heart contain a lot of mitochondria considering the effort they have to put in.
Since the beginning of time, nutritional supplements based on coQ10 were in the ubiquinone form, which must then be reduced to ubiquinol by our bodies. Yet, ubiquinol is much more soluble in blood and is therefore more easily transported to cells. This better absorption of CoQ10 in ubiquinol form is not negligible since 150 mg of ubiquinol gives a blood concentration of coenzyme Q10 equivalent to 1200 mg of ubiquinone. This form is also the closest to cellular coQ10.
Recent research shows that it is in its reduced form, ubiquinol, that coenzyme Q10 is the most effective.
Coenzyme Q10, one of the best friends of the elderly
In fact, in humans, CoQ10levels gradually decrease from age 20 onward to become virtually zero by age 50. This has the effect of accelerate the aging processto weaken the muscle cardiacthe immune system and vitality in general.
Beneficial effects of coenzyme Q10
-
- Disorders cardiac Heart failure 50 to 150mg/day (if severe 300mg/day), angina, rhythm disorders, hypertension.
-
- An anti-aging nutritional supplement due to its powerful anti-oxidant role, cardiovascular protection, energy boost and muscle toning.
-
- For athletes or people who lack tone as it increases energy and endurance while reducing aches and cramps.
-
- Immunostimulant as it stimulates the production of white blood cells and NK (anti-cancer) cells and several studies indicate that taking CoQ10 supplements (100 mg twice daily) may improve the immune response in people with AIDS.
-
- Different studies have shown the interest of coenzyme Q10 in different pathologies such as muscular dystrophies, diabetes insulin-dependent, kidney disease and certain neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Huntington's chorea.).
- It is a natural medicine treatment of choice for periodontosis, chronic inflammation of the gums that can lead to receding teeth.
Be careful with statins
The current drug treatment for high cholesterol is statins. This treatment is effective but has frequent side effects in the form of muscular pain or weakness, fatigue, memory and concentration problems, sleep disturbances, sexual problems and difficulties in regulating body temperature.
Unfortunately, the production of coenzyme Q10 is also affected by statin use. Indeed, coenzyme Q10 levels fall by 25% to 40% under statin treatment. Taking statins is therefore equivalent to replacing one cardiovascular risk factor (excess cholesterol) with another (decreased coenzyme Q10).
