What is Ghassoul?

Ghassoul, or Rhassoul, is a volcanic clay harvested in the Atlas Mountains. Its unique composition, rich in magnesium, silicon, iron, potassium, sodium, trace elements and pro-vitamins, makes it a precious skin care product with purifying, softening and revitalizing properties. However, it contains less aluminum oxide and calcium oxide than other clays. That's why this product is so gentle on the skin, even for sensitive skins!

This natural ingredient is part of the traditions typical of Morocco and Tunisia. It can be used for hair and skin care. skin and you could easily find it in hammams accompanied by argan oil.

How to use Ghassoul on the skin

Ghassoul is recommended for oily, combination, acne-prone and dull skin. It can be used as a gentle scrub, a cleanser for the epidermis, a mask for combination skin to bring balance, or as a mask for acne-prone skin, especially for blackheads!

Here are a few DIY recipes using Ghassoul :

A) As a facial cleanser

  • Mix a small amount of Rhassoul powder with water to obtain a creamy texture (neither too liquid nor too thick).
  • You can replace the water with a hydrolat or one of the following floral waters:
  • Geranium and rose floral waters,  blueberry or lavender.
  • Apply a thin layer to wet facial skin.
  • Rest time: 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Finish by rinsing.

B) As a face mask:

You can also add a tablespoon of herbal powder to the mixture. We recommend nettle powder or orange powder. Orange powder has toning and astringent properties, while nettle powder is known for its mineralizing and fortifying properties.

  • Mix all the ingredients together to obtain a homogeneous texture.
  • Then apply the mask to wet skin.
  • Avoid the eye area
  • Apply the mask in a thick layer.
  • Rest time: 10 minutes
  • Rinse with clean water.

C) Ghassoul for acne-prone skin and combination to oily skin

Rhassoul has the ability to reduce oily skin thanks to its absorbent and cleansing qualities. In this way, it is able to reduce imperfections. Here's a DIY recipe for a mask:

  1. Prepare a clay paste by mixing water with clay and applying it to your skin as a mask.
  2. Perform this treatment once a week for 15 minutes.
  3. Bonus tip: you can addJojoba oil with a few drops of Petit Grain Bigarade essential oil or Tea Tree to your mask for more effective results.µ

D) Face mask

Ingredients: 

  • 10 ml of honey
  • 10 ml lemon juice
  • 50 grams Rhassoul
  • 1 teaspoon argan oil
  • 1 teaspoon milk

Mix all the ingredients to make the face mask.

Precautions for use on Ghassoul 

  • Perform a sensitivity test on a small area of skin (such as the inside of the wrist) before using Ghassoul on the face or hair. Wait 24 hours to ensure there is no allergic reaction.
  • Avoid contact with eyes. In case of contact with eyes and mucous membranes, rinse thoroughly with water.
  • Moisturize your skin and hair after using Ghassoul. Ghassoul can dry out hair and skin, so it's important to use a moisturizing lotion. moisturizing cream or a conditioner nourishing after rinsing. 
  • Moderate use: Rhassoul should not be used too frequently. We recommend using it 1 to 2 times a week for the skin and 1 use every two weeks for the hair, especially for dry, fragile hair. 
  • Store preferably away from light and heat, in a dry place.
  • Do not allow Ghassoul to dry completely on the skin or hair. Once dry, it can be difficult to remove and may cause irritation. Keep it moist by spraying a little water if necessary, and don't exceed a 10-15 minute exposure time.
  • Beware of draughts when handling, as clay is powdery. It must not be inhaled. In the event of excessive inhalation, it is essential to ventilate directly into fresh air. 
  • Metal utensils should not be used when working with clays, as they lose much of their effectiveness. Instead, use wooden, plastic or ceramic utensils. 
  • Pregnant women, nursing mothers and young children should seek medical advice before use.
  • When applied to the skin, clay should not be reused. Once used, it must be discarded. 
  • Do not let the clay dry.
