Why choose plant-based colorants?

Chers Santies,

Hair, whether long or short, brunette, blonde or redhead, curly or straight, is a key element of personal expression. We all have specific goals when it comes to caring for our hair: moisturizing, promoting hair growth or finding the right hair color. The harmful effects of traditional hair coloring are well documented: it can cause itching, eye and throat irritation, and skin allergies in professional colorists.

Fortunately, safer, less aggressive alternatives exist for achieving brilliant color without compromising your hair's health.

What is vegetable coloring?

La plant-based hair coloralthough based on ancient traditions, is enjoying a resurgence in popularity. Many hair salons are now adopting this natural method, abandoning chemical processes.

Composed of plant powders and henna, the vegetable coloring offers a vast palette of shades thanks to the various natural pigments available. By mixing these powders with water, we obtain a paste which, when applied as a mask, profoundly modifies hair color or highlights, depending on the plants used.

The benefits of plant-based hair color

La plant-based hair color has an undeniable advantage: its non-toxicity. Unlike chemical colorants, which are often irritating, aggressive and potentially toxic to the hair and body over the long term (particularly through skin absorption and inhalation during application), dye plants and henna offer a natural, safe and effective alternative.

Chemical care, including shampoings and colorants, can give a shiny appearance to hair thanks to silicones and other substances, but these products can suffocate hair rather than actually nourish it. After application, hair may look soft, but it often becomes rough and unmanageable as the silicone film fades.

In contrast, vegetable coloring respects the hair's integrity by allowing it to breathe. It doesn't alter the hair's natural structure, allowing it to retain its vitality while providing effective coloring.

Many users of plant-based hair color notice a change in the texture of their hair, discovering its true nature without being coated in chemicals. For example, hair that used to appear straight can become slightly wavy, revealing its natural authenticity.

Which plants should be used in vegetable colorants?

  1. Les hennés : These plants originate from oriental countries, the Maghreb and Africa. There are two types of henna: neutral henna (which does not color the hair, but is used as a base for herbal hair care products) and coloring henna (which offers a range of colors around red and copper). It's vital to check that the henna you choose is 100% natural, because if it contains metallic salts, the reaction with an old chemical dye can burn the hair and cause deep damage.
  2. Egyptian henna The lightest, it offers an orange/copper hue.
  3. Yemeni henna Yemeni henna: coloring can vary according to your hair's natural color. This henna offers a coppery hue or red or chocolate highlights.
  4. Rjasthan henna Rjasthan henna: it offers a dark reddish hue that can even go as far as dark red or red. This henna comes from India.
  5. Jamila henna offers dark red and copper tones. Origin: Pakistan.
  6. Tazarine henna offers copper tones and originates from Morocco.
  7. Gabès henna Gabès henna: offers dark colors with red highlights and comes from Tunisia.
  8. Dye plants Henna is also mixed with tinctorial plants to obtain more nuances. For example: indigo will darken the color and can even lead to black; chamomile matricaria will lighten the hair; rhapontic will create honey highlights; beet will offer pink, red or burgundy hues.

The difference between vegetable and chemical dyes

The two types of coloring differ in terms of use, application and final result. We have two different methods, so it's normal not to get the same result.

It's important to note that the purpose of vegetable coloring is to add nuances to your natural hair color. So it's not possible to go blonde if you were brunette to begin with.

  • For blond hair: honey color
  • For dark hair: chocolate, auburn and dark red colors
  • For chestnut hair: shades of copper, chocolate or more or less vivid red.
