Official Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for pesticides

Each year, organizations such as the DGCCRF (Direction des Fraudes) establishes a report on the results of the monitoring and control plans for pesticide residues in plant production.

However, despite the changes in the regulations and the measures taken with regard to the Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs), we note that plants are increasingly contaminated.

Figures for the year 2008 published in 2010 show that 43.8% of fruits (60% of the 43.8%) and vegetables contain pesticide residues, 4% of which exceed the Maximum Residue Levels.

In December 2010, the association "Générations Futures" published the results of a survey on the exposure of a group of children (about ten years old) to food chemicals suspected of being carcinogenic.

By taking non-organic food for 4 meals and a snack, all concocted following the recommendations of the Ministry of Health. This includes 5 fresh fruits and vegetables a day, at least 3 dairy products and a liter and a half of water.

Accredited laboratories, specialized in food analysis, have searched for pesticides and various chemical substances.

Results? In 24 hours, a child is likely to be exposed to 128 chemical residues, including 81 different chemicals, during the day, just through his or her diet.

Among these chemical molecules, 47 are suspected of being carcinogenic and 37 of them are suspected of acting as endocrine disruptors (substances recognized by European or American health authorities)!

The best is the 36 different pesticides ingested in a single day!

By comparing a non-organic school meal (fruits, vegetables, cereals) to a meal composed of fruits, vegetables and cereals of organic origin, the association "Générations Futures" calculated that there were 223 times less pesticides in organic food than in conventional food!
