Lyme: herbal medicine to the rescue

Multi-resistant bacteria (MRB) are becoming more and more common in today's society. Among them are Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae (responsible for hospital-acquired infections) and staphylococcus aureus.

Lyme :  maladie chronique ou aiguë ?

The Borrelia burgdorferi responsible for Lyme disease also appears to be part of the resistant club.

However, this is not the opinion of everyone and the debate is raging in the medical world.

Indeed, it depends on the course of the disease. If it is favorable when borreliosis is diagnosed and treated promptly with antibiotics, it is possible that the infection will not develop further.

But in some cases, antibiotics are ineffective, according to some patients. Chronic symptoms then appear and can be quite debilitating.

These symptoms can be multiple:

  • Fatigue;

  • Fever;

  • Stiff neck;

  • Headaches;

  • Joint and/or muscle pain;

  • Memory Disorders;

  • Nausea and vomiting;

  • Neurological manifestations (facial paralysis, isolated meningitis, acute myelitis);

  • Skin problems (such as acrodermatitis when the skin loses its suppleness and takes on a crumpled, wrinkled or cracked appearance)

Yet the very existence of chronic Lyme disease is rejected by many specialists.

Action « Ensemble contre Lyme » pour plus de reconnaissance de la maladie

In July 2019, some 30 French deputies and senators decided to make a move to demand recognition of the chronic consequences of Lyme disease. They wished to end the denial surrounding this disease and thus finally consider the people who suffer from it.

This request supports the "Ensemble contre Lyme" movement, which was protesting that day in the streets of Paris against the lack of recognition by the medical profession of the chronic form of the disease (1).

But since then, nothing has really changed...

La phytothérapie pour lutter contre la maladie de Lyme

Spring is back and, with it, the time for walks in the fields and woods. So you need to be vigilant and get back into the habit of doing the famous " tick inspection " after outings in nature.

Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which is often transmitted to humans through the bite of a tick. While prevention is best, there are several herbs that can help you naturally relieve some of the symptoms of the disease in the event that you contract the infection.

La cardère, une indispensable pour lutter contre la borréliose

The carder plant, dipsacus fullonum, is the plant par excellence in the treatment of Lyme disease. Its virtues allow it to have several interesting effects on the disease. Thus, the carder helps to strengthen the immune system and detoxify.

The properties of the carder are the following:

  • Antibacterial: it is very effective against all bacteria of the spirochete family, which includes Borrelia.

  • Detoxifying: it helps the body eliminate neurotoxins due to the bacteria.

  • Diuretic: it stimulates the emunctories (liver and kidneys) and has a draining action.

  • Anti-inflammatory : it works on rheumatism and joint pain which are common symptoms of the disease.

La sarriette, une plante aux multiples actions

Savory, satureja montana, is a medicinal plant with antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. It is particularly active on infections of the intestinal system and urinary tract. This is what makes it very useful for Lyme disease which acts on the colon and intestine.

In parallel, it fights againstsecondary infections (candidiasis, mycosis) that can occur in chronic Lyme disease when immunity is weakened

Le chardon-marie, une plante pour le foie

The maria thistle, silybum marianum, is a medicinal plant rich in silybin. This molecule helps to reduce toxins attacking the liver. Freed from these toxins, the liver can regenerate and resume its hepato-protective action.

Borrelia releases a lot of toxins into the body and the thistle will support its toxin removal work.

In addition, milk thistle is also a good antioxidant and acts on blood pressure in case of hypotension.

Contraindications: Milk thistle should not be used in cases of hypertension and allergies to Asteraceae.
