Treatments for Lyme disease

The specifics of your Lyme disease treatment will depend on your case. A short-term course of antibiotics will heal you easily if you are at an early stage. Successful treatment of the most complicated cases, however, requires three to four weeks of antibiotic therapy and possibly additional treatments. Here's how the different stages and symptoms of Lyme disease are treated.

Prescriptions for Lyme disease

Your healthcare provider can probably effectively treat your Lyme disease with the appropriate use of antibiotics. In general, the sooner you begin treatment after infection, the faster and more complete your recovery will be. Antibiotics such as doxycycline, cefuroxime axetil and amoxicillin, can speed up the healing of your erythema migrans rash. These medications also prevent later symptoms such asarthritis or neurological problems. Doxycycline will thus effectively treat most other tick-borne diseases.

Lyme disease treatment for children and pregnant or nursing women

Doxycycline can stain permanent teeth that develop in young children or newborns if Lyme disease occurs in children younger than 9 years of age or in pregnant or nursing women. In this case, these people are usually treated with the following medications:

  • Amoxicillin
  • Cefuroxime axetil
  • Penicillin

Lyme Arthritis

If you have Lyme arthritis, your doctor may treat you with oral antibiotics. If your arthritis is severe, you may receive ceftriaxone or penicillin intravenously. To ease discomfort and promote healing, your health care provider may also :

  • Prescribing medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS)
  • Perform joint suction (draw fluid from affected joints)
  • Surgically remove the inflamed lining of your affected joints

In most people,Lyme arthritis will go away within a few weeks or months after treatment with antibiotics. In some cases, however, it can take years to disappear completely.

Some individuals with Lyme disease who have not been treated for several years may be cured of their arthritis with appropriate antibiotic treatment. If the disease persists long enough, however, it can permanently damage the structure of the joints.

Neurological problems related to Lyme disease

If you have more severe neurologic symptoms, your doctor will likely treat you with the antibiotic ceftriaxoneadministered intravenously once a day for up to one month. With this type of treatment, most people make a full recovery.

Heart problems due to Lyme disease

Health care providers prefer to treat people with Lyme disease with more severe cardiovascular symptoms with antibiotics such as ceftriaxone or penicillin. These antibiotics are given intravenously for about three to four weeks.

Important note: prolonged antibiotic treatment is no better than short-term antibiotic treatment and may even be harmful.

Complementary medicines to treat Lyme disease

Some people have begun to explore the use of natural remedies for Lyme disease, such as samento and banderol. A form of cat's claw - an herb best known as an arthritis remedy - samento is said to treat Lyme's disease by strengthening your immune system. The banderol comes from the bark of a South American tree known as Otoba parvifolia. This drug neutralizes the bacteria associated withLyme disease.

Other natural remedies to fight Lyme disease

Samento is one of many remedies thought to benefit people with Lyme disease. Some alternative medicine proponents suggest that herbs like astragalus and echinacea can strengthen your immune system and eliminate germs from your body. Supplements such as methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) are claimed to relieve joint pain. And ginkgo biloba is touted as a natural approach to increasing mental health.

However, as with banderol and samento, there is little research to support the use of either of these remedies in the treatment of Lyme disease.

Consult your doctor before using natural remedies for Lyme disease

consult a doctor

If you are interested in banderol, samento or other herbal treatments, consult your doctor first. While it may be tempting to want to try it, improper treatment of Lyme disease can lead to serious complications such asjoint problems and nervous system disorders. Therefore, self-treatment with herbs is not recommended.

In addition, it is important to keep in mind thatthe side effects and risks of these herbs at regular or high doses, are not known, nor is their safety in children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and people with otherhealth problems.Your doctor can help you weigh the risks with benefits.

Research on the treatment of Lyme disease

After treatment for Lyme disease, you may still experience muscular pain, neurological symptoms such as problems with memory and concentration and fatigue. These symptoms often disappear with time.

Studies suggest that people withLyme disease chronic may be genetically predisposed to developing an autoimmune response that contributes to their symptoms. Researchers are currently investigating the significance of this finding in detail and conducting studies to determine the best time frame for administering antibiotics to the various signs and symptoms of Lyme disease.
