Vitamin C, a useful contribution against eye problems

The eye, this organ of sight so complex

The eye is a sensitive organ that is very exposed to the sun and pollution every minute of our lives. Despite its many protective cilia, the eye is subject to dust and impurities in the air. Therefore, it will be more quickly subjected to a certain vulnerability. Indeed, the eyes are also susceptible to disease and even if it is less talked about as a disabling disease, the conditions related to vision are numerous: chronic conjunctivitis, styes, cataracts, degeneration related to aging, glaucoma or secondary eye problems related to diabetes or cholesterol, for example.

In order to fight against a certain aging of the eye, nutrition is the first medicine to use. Indeed, the vitamins and minerals that we get from our food are very important and allow our body to live in full health while trying to reduce the various disorders that can occur. Cataracts and macular degeneration (AMD: Age-Related Macular Degeneration) can be reduced by up to 70 percent in a patient who has a sufficient intake of vitamin C, a vitamin whose benefits we will analyze in this article.

Focus on vitamin C

Ascorbic acid or more commonly called vitamin C is an essential vitamin that has multiple actions on our body. Unfortunately, it is not stored in our bodies and we must therefore provide the daily dose we need. The recommended daily intake is 60 milligrams for a healthy person and 100 to 200 milligrams for smokers. Smoking prevents the body from absorbing this vitamin.

The needs are also increased in athletes who need a daily dose between 100 and 200 milligrams as well as in stressed people, pregnant women and elderly people or in case of physical overwork.

How does the deficiency occur?

Deficiencies can have several origins and the most classic one is a deficiency of intake. In fact, poor dietary hygiene can have an impact on our vitamin C levels in the body.

Foods to eat to maintain vitamin C levels are: citrus fruits such as lemons or oranges, red fruits such as strawberries or raspberries, parsley, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers and even potatoes. By opting for a varied and diversified diet, vitamin C intake will be sufficient to meet the recommended daily quota.

If your consumption of raw fruit is not sufficient, taking a vitamin C supplement is quite possible and recommended in certain situations. There are two possibilities, vitamin C can be either :

  • Synthetic and fully available to the body
  • Natural by consuming acerola tablets for example.

Although an overdose is not toxic for the body, the risks of excitement or diarrhea are present if one does not respect the doses or the schedules of taking a synthetic vitamin C supplement.

Possible interactions

Drug interactions also exist with the additional intake of vitamin C

  • Oral contraceptives prevent vitamin C from remaining in the body.
  • Aspirin, for the same reason as the birth control pill.
  • Antacids containing aluminum should be taken at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after taking vitamin C

Nutritherapy at the service of our health.

Finally, by acting at the heart of nutritherapy, the loss of sight can also be reduced. Indeed, it has been proven that a combination of vitamin C with vitamin E and zinc would be beneficial in case of vision problems.

Fill your plate with colors to guide you to the health of each of your organs, including your eyes.
