Eschscholtzia belongs to the poppy family (source of opium), but is non-addictive and non-addictive.
In herbal medicine, the whole eschscholtzia plant can be used, but it is essentially the aerial flowering parts that are of interest and therefore used. Eschschotzia is sedative without being narcotic, and is perfectly tolerated, even by children (it has no toxicity or side effects). It contains californidine, a natural hypnotic of the alkaloid family, which has a beneficial effect on the quality of sleep when falling asleep, but also on nocturnal awakenings and nightmares, with the advantage of being non-addictive. A natural anxiolytic, escholtzia's antispasmodic properties help alleviate the pain and cramps that accompany sleep disorders.
Papaveraceae often contain high levels of alkaloids (like the opium poppy or the poppy). Eschscholtzia also contains alkaloids, but the roots are much more potent than the aerial parts (2-3% and 0.5% respectively). The most important eschscholtzia alkaloids have been studied by pharmacologists and do not appear to present any notable toxicity, with the exception of Sanguinarine, which is only present in trace form in the aerial parts (unlike the roots).

Internal use: 15 to 30 drops, one to three times a day as needed, or 30 minutes before bedtime.
External use: several times a day, apply locally or with a moistened pad on the area to be treated.

Some people have noticed a certain torpor after taking eschscholtzia. For sensitive people, it is therefore advisable to take it preferably in the evening, to avoid alcohol during treatment (as it increases the sedative effect) and not to combine eschscholtzia with other tranquilizers. In case of torpor, avoid activities requiring concentration and sustained attention (e.g. driving).
Contraindicated for pregnant and breast-feeding women (due to the presence of certain alkaloids).
