The "grapefruit effect

When you decide to have a "healthy" breakfast of freshly squeezed fruit juice with half a grapefruit and a handful of oilseeds every morning after showering, you really think you're doing the right thing. Without imagining for a moment what is going on in your body.

Nevertheless, although grapefruit is extremely beneficial to your health, a problem may quickly emerge if you don't know everything about grapefruit.

Grapefruit: powerful detoxifier and purifier of the body

Indeed, in the grapefruit, everything is good! Indeed, it is true that the pulp is rich in a soluble fiber with remarkable therapeutic effects; the bark contains essential oils that will have an interesting impact in different areas of health and the seed alone has antifungal and parasiticidal properties. For an antioxidant effect, prefer it pink, it will be more sweet to the taste.

Cultivated in Asia, the fruit of the grapefruit tree, although very good to the taste, also has therapeutic benefits that are recognized by the Chinese ancestral medicine. The latter consider this fruit to be a cold fruit with a sweet and sour taste that regulates the circulation of qi. However, prolonged cures in thin, demineralized or cold people are totally contraindicated.

Grapefruit health benefits

This fruit, which can be found in its yellow or pink form, is a powerful detoxifier and purifier of the body. In addition, it is also used for its aperitive, digestive and drainage functions of the liver function. In this perspective, it will be recommended for detox cures as well as for diet cures where cholesterol impacts on health. A study conducted by Dr. Shela Gorinstein and Professor Abraham Caspi proves that a heart patient should eat a grapefruit every day to reduce the risk of cholesterol.

In addition, the other indications of grapefruit are numerous because it will be used for example in case of anorexia, colds, varicose veins and even the stains on the teeth could be removed by a natural remedy based on grapefruit juice.

Nevertheless, the actions are not only positive. Moreover, the precautions of use for this fruit are rarely specified or indicated by the health practitioners.

Contraindications of grapefruit

We very often highlight the dangers associated with certain allopathic drugs or the precautions to be taken when using essential oils, but sometimes a simple fruit can do real damage too.

The big rule to remember with grapefruit is that it blocks the metabolism of many drugs.

Biology explains that for a drug to be assimilated by the body, certain enzymes have to digest and assimilate the active ingredients taken. However, by ingesting a grapefruit or its juice while taking medication, this juicy fruit inhibits these enzymes, those of the cytochrome family present in the wall of the small intestine. The consequence will be a potentiation of the molecule, of the active principle which will not have been digested as it should be by the enzyme and which will then be found in greater quantity in the blood. Unfortunately, this can lead to a drug overdose. Note that this ignorance could cost the lives of many seriously ill people:

  • Individuals taking treatment with immunosuppressants
  • People taking a treatment including anticoagulants
  • People being treated for high blood pressure
  • People taking cholesterol-lowering drugs
  • People taking red yeast rice should space out the intake between the two components
  • People undergoing cancer treatment
  • People undergoing treatment for vascular problems
  • People who are taking treatment for urinary disorders
  • Etc...

The list is unfortunately very long and the first advice if you must take a medicine in the morning is not to take it simultaneously with the ingestion of a grapefruit or its juice.
