Cholesterol is an essential substance in our body that is part of the composition of cell membranes and is involved in the production of a number of hormones. But its increase in the blood and in the walls of the arteries can be dangerous (atherosclerosis).
Contrary to what we might think, only 1/4 of the cholesterol in our body comes from food, 3/4 from the liver.
Good and bad cholesterol
Cholesterol in the blood is transported by lipoproteins (Fat + Protein). LDL lipoproteins transport circulating cholesterol from the liver to the cells. HDL lipoproteins transport circulating cholesterol from cells to the liver.
Thus, LDL lipoproteins play the role of delivery truck, while HDL lipoproteins play the role of garbage truck. LDL cholesterol is the bad cholesterol because it is the one that can bind to the blood vessels and gradually clog them.
HDL cholesterol is the good cholesterol because it is the one that leaves the cells to be recycled and eliminated by the liver. People with high LDL cholesterol and/or low HDL cholesterol have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease:
- a 1% drop in LDL cholesterol levels reduces the risk of heart attack by 2%.
- A 1% increase in HDL cholesterol levels decreases the risk by 3%.

Natural program to reduce bad cholesterol

- Guggulipid is a resin that is obtained by making incisions in the bark of an Indian tree, the Commiphora mukul. The hypolipidemic properties of this resin are attributed to sterol compounds: guggulsterones. In addition to its anti-cholesterol activity, guggulipid also has anti-platelet aggregation, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
- L'inositol hexanicotinate. In several clinical investigations, niacin (vitamin B3) has been shown to be as effective as drugs in reducing LDL and increasing HDL, and appears to play into several other factors leading to cardiovascular disease. Unfortunately, some people do not tolerate it well and experience problems with vasodilation of the face and neck.
These problems no longer exist with a new form of niacin: inositol hexanicotinate found in Colmin+, a food supplement that helps maintain normal cholesterol levels. It is taken at a rate of 3 x 2 capsules per day before meals.
