Osteoarthritis: relieve it with plants and essential oils

Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disease, affecting people of all ages. It is characterized by paralyzing pain, sometimes acute or stabbing, which often alternates with periods of temporary respite, but can lead to severe handicaps, up to and including total impotence of the joint.

Immune dysfunction plays a central role in this disease. Chondrocytes, the cells responsible for cartilage maintenance, lose their regenerative function and produce inflammatory neurotransmitters, aggravating cartilage wear. This vicious circle often leads to the complete destruction of cartilage and, in extreme cases, to the fitting of a prosthesis.

Preventing and slowing the progression of osteoarthritis

Certain factors, such as excess weight, joint trauma or a sedentary lifestyle, aggravate osteoarthritis. To minimize these risks, we recommend :

  • Maintain appropriate physical activity to strengthen the muscles around the joints.

  • Prioritize quality sleep to help balance the nervous system.

  • Adopt an anti-inflammatory diet rich in omega-3turmeric, ginger and fresh vegetables.

These measures help to limit inflammatory processes and slow cellular aging, while protecting cartilage from damage.

Star plants for joint pain

Turmeric: a natural alternative to anti-inflammatory drugs

Turmeric is known for its powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Its root inhibits the production of certain hormones responsible for inflammation. Curcumin is highly effective and promotes weight loss.

German chamomile: a soothing tea

Used for centuries, German chamomile contains compounds that slow down the inflammatory processes responsible for arthritis. Six grams of tea taken twice daily improves joint sensitivity. In oil form, it is highly effective in reducing acute pain.

Ginger: a remedy for pain and stiffness

Ginger has been studied for its anti-inflammatory effects on osteoarthritis and polyarthritis.

Little-known plants with promising effects against osteoarthritis

Ashwagandha, bowsellie and gum tree

Traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine, ashwagandha has analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. Boswellia, or frankincense, acts on the prostaglandins responsible for inflammation. A six-week application of essential oil considerably reduces pain. Gum tree bark effectively protects your cartilage, preventing damage and reducing inflammation.

Essential oils to relieve osteoarthritis

Essential oils such as wintergreen (rich in methyl salicylate) or Egyptian geranium (rich in citronnellol) help reoxygenate and warm tissues. This potentiates the effect of the other active molecules.

Some essential oils, such as clovethyme, offer anaesthetic and anti-inflammatory properties. A rare molecule, paracymene, present in a certain thyme chemotype, also enhances anti-inflammatory properties while promoting cell regeneration.
