More than 12% of men and 7% of women will develop kidney stones at some point in their lives. This problem causes intense suffering and statistically the risk of recidivism is around 80%.
Conventional medicine offers the same explanation in all cases: too much calcium, too many vitamin supplements, too much animal protein and sometimes a genetic factor.
There is certainly an element of genetics that induces a family predisposition, but who can say if it is really genetics or rather a family eating behavior that is passed on and repeated from generation to generation?
For some, it will be too much salt added in cooked dishes or an excess of meat consumption, for others, poor quality tap water, a diet that is too acidic or the taking of certain medications that promote the appearance of kidney stones.
In any case, our health care system is very poorly equipped to deal with this painful problem.
As with many health concerns, the real and effective solution will be prevention, as it has been found that cutting out certain foods or eating other foods can prevent these stones from developing.
So how do you prevent these kidney stones?
Harvard researchers found that taking 180 mg of magnesium and 10 mg of vitamin B6 daily prevented kidney stones in 92.3% of cases. Other studies have shown significant reductions with doses of 500 mg of magnesium per day.
In this type of problem, an adapted diet is absolutely crucial.
The first step is to choose the least toxic diet possible. This means eating mainly fresh, organic food.
It is imperative to avoid refined foods and sugars, including table salt and flours, and to drink plenty of water with very little mineral content, spring water being the best. If you can't find spring water, which is almost impossible to find nowadays, you should turn to osmosis water, which has many health benefits. For people who still want to consume sweetened drinks, they can use stevia, which is currently one of the best ways to sweeten if desired.
Since it is known that kidney stones tend to develop in an acidic environment, this environment can be buffered by the daily intake of lemon juice or cider vinegar added to the drinking water.
For tea lovers, studies have shown that black and green tea can reduce the chances of developing kidney stones.
It is necessary to limit the protein intake of meat, especially from industrial farms. But also avoid supplements or poor quality proteins.
Other foods that have been shown to be beneficial for this condition include:
- dandelion root, olive oil, beans and watermelon.
- Cranberry juice will be consumed in the short term or in case of acute crisis. Indeed, cranberry juice contains polyphenolic compounds that dissolve kidney stones and drain them from the body with the urine. On the other hand, its long-term use could in some cases have the opposite effect, i.e. promote the formation of lithiasis, probably due to its high level of oxalic acid,
- Nettle leaf helps drain crystals through the kidneys and bladder before stone formation,
- Hydrangea root has diuretic and antilithic properties that prevent the formation of kidney stones and allow them to be ejected,
- euphorbia purpureum, also called gravel root, increases the emission of urine. By eliminating the excess of uric acid, it allows to basify the ground and consequently to avoid the formation of renal stones,
- Marshmallow root is also known to eliminate toxins and calm irritation of the urinary tract, making it easier to release kidney stones,
- horsetail regulates the calcium reserves stored in the body and soothes the inflammation of the urinary tract,
- Uva Ursi, Bearberry or Bearberry leaves increase renal microcirculation, limit the acid content of urine and are effective in cases of cystitis,
- corn silk reduces the risk of recurrent kidney stones and helps reduce bladder infections,
- As for the goldenrod flowers, it also fights urinary tract infection and helps to eliminate kidney stones.
