Emotional aromatherapy

Food plants, medicinal plants, ritual plants, they have always accompanied Man through the centuries and this, in all civilizations. In this article, we will discuss the aromatic essences of plants: essential oils. Discover which essences can support you emotionally from a biochemical and symbolic point of view. 

Aromatherapy Is a branch of phytotherapy. The active molecules present in essential oils have an impact on various functions of the body. Here, the priority is to act on the nervous system. Then, in a slightly more subtle approach, depending on the plant, its symbolism and its energetic potential, the vibrations of the essential oils selected will come into reasonance with yours which fluctuates according to your emotional state. Aromatherapy is in this sense a holistic practice that can support you both physically and psycho-emotionally

Terpenic aldehydes: nervous system calming agents.

This class of molecules is known to act directly on the nervous system by being electro-negative. 

The classic use of lemon verbena Lippia citriodora and lemon balm Melissa officinalis has to do with their calming power. The lemon scent provides calm and relaxation and acts through the classical neuro-olfactory connection pathways.

The use of terpene aldehydes does not present any neurotoxicity except, of course, in case of important overdose.

Shell marjoram essential oil origanum majorana

Rich in terpene, it is neurotonic by acting on the parasympathetic system. It is therefore hypotensive and tranquilizing. It is therefore perfect for calming anxious people. 

Advice: 1 or 2 drops diluted in vegetable oil. Massage the soles of the feet.

The essential oil of lavender officinale or true lavender, lavandula angustifolia

Primarily composed of linalool (monoterpene), lavandula angustifolia has green:

  • soothing
  • decontracting
  • sedative
  • hypotensive
  • antispasmodic

Advice : Massage the solar plexus with a few drops diluted in vegetable oil or by olfaction.

Roman chamomile essential oilchamaemelum nobile

This essential oil has powerful calming properties of the central nervous system. It relaxes the mind and soothes nervous tension as well as mental agitation and insomnia. It calms the mind and clarifies ideas. It harmonizes emotions and inner conflicts. 

Advice : Massage on the solar plexus in the evening at bedtime

Lemon essential oil, citrus limon

Lemon relieves the liver and brings optimism and confidence. In traditional Chinese medicine, the liver is associated with the emotion anger. By acting on it, you balance the energy of this organ. Thus, the anger dissipates and you find internal calm.

Advice: massage on the liver or internally. 

L’huile essentielle de rose de Damas rosa damascena 

This essential oil is rare and precious and acts on heart energy. In olfaction or in massage on the sternum, it brings softness and comfort. It is a precious oil that is expensive. In symbolism, this essential oil helps you work on self-worth and self-esteem. It souls bruised hearts and heartache. 

L’huile essentielle d’Ylang Ylang cananga odorata

This essential oil is known to be relaxing. It reharmonizes the emotions and calms the mind. It is antispasmodic.

Before an exam or any other situation that provokes stage fright, it allows you to put your mind at rest. 

Tip: inhale directly from the bottle. 

Olibanum frankincense essential oilboswellia carterii

The essential oil of frankincense is anti-depressant. It relieves melancholic spirits and those whose fear of change is pressing. This sacred essential oilhelps you to take height to put some sacred in your existence. 

Advice: in diffusion, 10 minutes several times a day

Essential Oils and Psychological Work

Obviously, taking essential oil cannot replace working with psychotherapy for severe or chronic cases. The two are complementary. However, caution is advised if you are on antidepressant or anxiolytic medication. In this case, please refer to the advice of your doctor, pharmacist or naturopath.

Recommendations

The plant essences have very real biochemical powers. They can cure as well as poison. Moreover, it is important to remember that it is the toxic principle of the plant that makes it interesting. 

Pregnant or breastfeeding women, children (except for true lavender) and asthmatics should not useessential oils under any circumstances without being monitored by a physician or competent therapist.
