Aromatherapy in diffusion: the right gestures

Natural does not mean safe and it is in this sense that aromatherapy should not be taken lightly. Its molecules are so powerful that they can cure as well as poison. In order to safely enjoy their benefits in diffusion, a few rules of practice are necessary. Discover them in the next few lines!

Never with children or pets in the room.

The airways of young children are fragile. They may experience an allergic reaction or even convulsions. It is imperative that you do not diffuse essential oils in your child's room or in your living area while your child is present. On the other hand, it is possible to leave your device plugged in for 5 minutes while he is away and then wait 10 minutes before bringing it into his room, for example. 

The animals are extremely sensitive to the volatile compounds in essential oils. This can result in simple discomfort up to and including vomiting and even neurological disruption. 

Caution with asthmatics

The essential oils may prove to be dangerous for asthmatics. It is strongly recommended that you contact a professional who is familiar with the subject (doctor, pharmacist, aromatherapist, naturopath) to determine which essential oils you or your loved ones can use. 

As a precaution, do not use. 

Do not let the essential oils diffuse continuously

Leaving essential oils on continuously does not help. The best is to let your atmosphere soak for 10 minutes then stop and start again 20 to 30 minutes later according to your needs (winter prevention, relaxation atmosphere, home fragrance...). The molecules remain suspended in the air for several tens of minutes or even several hours.

Do not heat the essential oil

Invest in an electric diffuser that does not heat the oil. Photophores, candle diffusers or any other device that heats the oil should be avoided. Indeed, by heating the oil, it burns and its quality is strongly altered.

Ionic diffusers are interesting especially since in addition to diffusing your oil cold, it emits negative ions that are good for your health and that of your habitat. In addition, many are now programmable, allowing you to diffuse your fragrances in sequence as previously recommended. 

Essential oils to diffuse at home

All essential oils can be diffused. However, some are more interesting than others. Here are a few that are the indispensables to have in your home for an olfactory practice.

  • The essential oil of Eucalyptus Radiata :diffused in the air allows to sanitize the room while protecting your respiratory tracts. This essential oil is catarrhal, which means that it allows the evacuation of the mucus contained in the bronchi. 
  • The essential oil of fine lavender Lavandula angustifolia ssp. Angustifolia has soothing properties. Diffused in a room a few minutes before sleeping, it perfumes the room with its sweet scent while bringing calm and serenity. Your sleep will then be favored and of better quality.
  • The essential oils of citrus fruits such as lemon Citrus limonum , petit grain bigarade Citrus aurantium var. amara ,sweet orange Citrus sinensis give optimism and joie de vivre. They bring pep and are remotivating.
  • Thymol thyme essential oil Thymus vulgaris CT thymol has remarkable anti-infective properties. Formerly used to disinfect operating rooms, it has a very powerful broad-spectrum antiseptic power. Thus, diffused regularly in a room, it will protect you from winter viruses.
  • The essential oil of Ylang-Ylang Cananga odorata and its sweet and fruity smell will bring in your home a touch of calm and relaxation.

Olfactotherapy 

Through their scent, essential oils stimulate certain fields in your primitive brain that will reactivate some of your buried memories. So not only do essential oils have a chemical power because of their molecular composition but also a power on the psychic. This aspect of thearomatherapy is not to be neglected and can even be very effective for people suffering from mood disorders such as depression or anxiety. 

In this case, in my professional practice, I suggest to people to choose an essential oil whose smell they like without necessarily paying attention to the properties of the oil they have chosen. The goal is ultimately to create a cocoon of softness, comfort and security. 

Finally 

The essential oils in diffusion act as well on the physical as on the psychic. Make sure you choose organic quality products with a specified chemotype. Be careful, its use must not be continuous, I insist!
